In Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, free induction decay (FID) is the observable NMR signal generated by non-equilibrium nuclear spin magnetization precessing about the magnetic field (conventionally along z). The signal we detect is called a Free Induction Decay (FID). The FID is produced by the macroscopic magnetization after the pulse. The magnetization will undergo several processes as it returns to equilibrium.
