Don't know if the new firmware solved this issue or not but I got the Echo Plus yesterday and got everything to work perfectly without the GW :) I'm looking at a Tradfri for a basic setup It took me quite a while to pair 8 bulbs with the Echo Plus. It seemed to be quite random whether or not it would find them. What seemed to work though was resetting the bulbs then leaving them off overnight.
